Thursday marked the beginning of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, one of the biggest film festivals in the world.

In honour of the festival’s 40th anniversary, we take a look at TIFF by the numbers.

This year, the festival will screen a total of 399 films and 256 will be premieres.

The longest film this year runs 278 minutes, while the shortest clocks in at 60 seconds. In total, all the films’ run times added up will be a hefty 30,894 minutes.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Over 3,000 volunteers – the most in TIFF’s history – will be making sure the festival runs smoothly.

And with all the screenings, events and parties to attend, 60 Ford Explorers will be transporting celebrities around the clock, making more than 500 trips a day.

The jewels adorning the stars are getting bigger, too.

This year, the largest Canadian diamond will be revealed at the festival: a colossal 15-carat stone set in a ring.

In 2010, actress Allie MacDonald wore a 75-carat rough diamond necklace from Birks valued at $1 million, the most valuable piece worn by a Canadian star. The necklace contained diamonds from a Canadian mine near Attawapiskat.

To make sure over 300 celebrities look picture perfect, stylists will go through 350 cans of hairspray.

Last year saw the highest amount of popcorn consumed by festival goers, when 2,900 pounds of popcorn was gobbled up. That’s over 82 35-pound sacks of popcorn seed.

This year, 20,000 bottles of Grolsch beer are expected to be consumed at TIFF parties.

Finally, TIFF is famous for being the start of the Oscar race. In the last 39 years, 13 People’s Choice Award winners were either nominated for or won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
