VERNON — The Vernon fire department says RCMP are now investigating a back-alley blaze that caused a smoky situation at a Vernon pet store on Sunday.

At about 7:40 a.m., fire crews responded to the alley of AJ’s Pets and Things on 31st Avenue.

Firefighters believe the small fire was arson.

“RCMP were called to attend the scene as it was a set fire. The investigation is now in their hands,” says Fire Captain Reinhard Mann.

Mann says smoke from the fire was pulled into the building by the pet store’s air intake system, filling the space with smoke.

He says the pets were smoky but are otherwise unharmed.

In May of 2014, some recycling material was also allegedly set on fire behind the same pet store. Two men, 24 and 30, were arrested.
