When the U of L Pronghorns were able to add well-known international coach Richard Suggitt to be the head man of the school’s rugby program, many considered it just the jolt the team needed to get back to its dominant ways.
Today, the Pronghorns welcomed Suggitt to campus for the first time. He hopes to help restore the proud tradition of ‘Horns rugby.
“There have been some great players here,” said Suggitt. “We have to do that again. Things go in cycles, you look at the Montreal Canadiens and how many championships they won in hockey, or the Celtics, or the Bulls, then you know things trail off a little bit. Our job is to invigorate (the program) a little bit more.”
Suggitt brings with him a wealth of international experience. Most recently, he was the Head Coach of the U.S. National Women’s Seven’s Program, where he led his team to a Pan Am Games silver medal.
The Pronghorns take to the field for the first time Saturday at U of L Community Stadium 10:00 am, when they host the Victoria Vikes in an exhibition match.
