Prospective plans to demolish old Children’s Hospital a “nightmare”

MONTREAL – Daniel Green, deputy leader of the Green Party, is calling potential plans to sell and demolish the old Montreal Children’s Hospital “a nightmare.”

He said the space can be put to good use that doesn’t include constructing new luxury condos.

“There could be parks, soccer fields, social housing for First Nations homelessness. There is a need here for that,” he said.

He also said that he’s worried the site will be sold cheaply because there are reports of asbestos in the structure.

The building was erected in 1933 and has housed the hospital since 1956; it has stood empty since May, when the Children’s moved to the MUHC’s Glen Site.

“People have lived with the red bricks of the Children’s since 1933,” said Green, adding that it is one of Montreal’s iconic buildings.
