Connor McDavid effect: Oilers rookie game moving to bigger stage

EDMONTON – It’s another indication of the enthusiasm in Edmonton surrounding Connor McDavid. The annual game between the Edmonton Oilers rookies and the University of Alberta Golden Bears is moving from Clare Drake Arena to Rexall Place.

It’s the first time in the 24-year history of the contest that it won’t be played at Clare Drake. Tickets for the Sept. 16 match-up are being sold for $30.

The Oilers haven’t announced the reason for the move to the larger venue or whether McDavid will play in the contest, but all signs for the change point to the euphoria caused by the 18-year-old phenom.

Seven thousand people showed up at Rexall Place in July to see McDavid during the team’s rookie camp scrimmage.

Tickets for the Oilers home opener are going for as much as $2,400 on StubHub.
