Montreal – After walking 60 kilometres over two days, participants in the 11th annual Pharmaprix Weekend to End Women’s Cancers were greeted with much fanfare at the finish line.
The event, the largest women’s cancers fundraiser in Quebec history, raised $2.2 million benefiting the Jewish General Hospital’s Segal Cancer Centre. Over the years it has raised more than $58 million.
Siobhan O’Brien, associate director of special events with the Jewish General Hospital Foundation expressed her gratitude to the Montreal community for its continued support.
According to event organizers, one in seven women will be diagnosed with breast or gynecologic cancer in their lifetime. In Canada that means 36, 530 women will be diagnosed and more than 8, 415 will die from the disease.
The walk brings together a community of participants, survivors and their supporters with the common objective of ending women’s cancers.
As O’Brien explained the walk has changed over the years.
“This event has evolved since we started in 2005. We started out as the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. We then enlarged the mandate to include all women’s cancers and now we’re going even further– we’re going to one walk, one day, all cancers.”
Next year’s One Walk to Conquer Cancer will take place on August 20th and features a 25 kilometre walk through the streets of Montreal. To register, donate, or simply request information the public is being asked to visit the One Walk website.
