REGINA – A spontaneous Las Vegas wedding officiated by an Elvis impersonator marked the eighth wedding ceremony for Karl Fix and Kim Beug.
The couple married for the first time in South Africa in 2004, followed by a Bavarian celebration in Germany and another wedding in Regina.
“Never say never but I think lucky 13 in Mongolia, we’ll shut it down after that.”
Their globe-trotting adventures were sparked on small plane to Mali in 2006 when they struck up a conversation with the only other passenger on the flight. Fix explained to the man that they lost their only marriage license issued from their first ceremony.
“I recanted to him that we don’t have a legal marriage license,” said Karl. “He said ‘you know I can try to arrange a legal wedding ceremony in Timbuktu, Mali in the Sahara Desert’ because he was an official.”
The avid travelers then began a journey experiencing other cultures through weddings, experiencing Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, and various tribal ceremonies.

One tradition that stands out to the duo took place in the Amazon.

The weddings are usually planned in secret by Karl and are sprung on Sandy by surprise.
After nearly a decade of ceremonies Sandy said she can guess when the weddings are coming, but admits she can never be too sure.
“We were in the Galapagos, on a cruise ship on our wedding anniversary and I thought ‘oh the captain’s going to marry us’. But he missed out on that one.”
The couple eventually were married by a captain on a ship in Greenland on July 31 2015, and this might be one of their final weddings.
“Never say never but I think lucky 13, Mongolia, we’ll shut it down after that,” said Karl.
“He told me that six weddings ago,” laughed Sandy.
While the weddings may be ending the couple like to joke that with the sheer amount of marriage certificates they have from around the world divorce isn’t an option.
“Not even the top divorce lawyer in Canada would take on that case,” said Karl.
The couple plans on marrying in Mongolia in September.
