New temporarily reduced fares on BC Ferries begin today

WATCH: Beginning Tuesday BC Ferries is temporarily cutting fares on all southern routes but as Kylie Stanton explains, drivers won’t be getting a break.

Starting today, BC Ferries temporarily reduced pricing will come into effect for passengers.

The first promotion is a 50 per cent discount on passenger fares during certain off-peak times.

Last month, BC Ferries said foot passenger traffic was up five per cent and vehicle traffic by 4.7 per cent in the first quarter; which caused their net earnings to rise by almost $5 million compared to last year.

From Sept. 8 to Oct. 15, regular passenger fares will be discounted 50 per cent on off-peak days of the week and certain off-peak times of the day on the major and minor routes. From Oct. 1 to 31 all sailings on the northern routes will be 50 per cent off. The discount applies only to passenger fares and not vehicle fares.

“While we are uncertain how long this current growth in traffic will last, this promotion allows us an opportunity this fall to test variable pricing concepts in order to understand their impact on traffic trends, customer responses, and operations,” said BC Ferries’ president and CEO Mike Corrigan in statement.

The fall promotion will also benefit seniors. From Sept. 8 to Oct. 15, seniors travelling on the major and minor routes will get 50 per cent off the regular seniors’ passenger fare.

BC Ferries said they are also planning some other pricing promotions for late fall and next spring.
