TORONTO – When police first arrived at a home in Phoenix, Arizona Thursday morning, it was to serve a search warrant for drug-related charges.
But they ended making an entirely unexpected discovery, one that would keep them on the property for almost 12 hours: a newborn puppy, lodged inside of a drainage pipe.
When police arrived at the home at 39th Avenue and Buckeye Road at 11:30 a.m. Thursday morning, they discovered several dogs on the property, including an adult female dog and two dead puppies.
Police say they believe the female dog had recently given birth to a litter near the drainage pipe, and one of the newborns accidentally fell in.
Neighbors told local reporters that the female dog was a stray, and had been abandoned after the owners of the home had been evicted and never came back for her.
That set the stage for a long and painstaking rescue, as police, Humane Society workers, and even a local plumber tried to solve the pup’s perilous predicament.
Crews used a snake camera to locate the puppy, which had fallen more than 20 feet from the pipe’s opening. They then cut into walls and dug into the ground to try and retrieve the newborn.
“I just want to cry,” Nicole McCormick, with the Arizona Humane Society, told ABC-15 News.“We try not to get attached.”
Finally, at 10:30 p.m. that night, they were able to rescue the puppy; hungry, shivering, but otherwise ok.
The pup, believed to be an American Pit Bull/Terrier mix, was transported to Second Chance Animal Hospital to undergo medical treatment.
Oh, and about that drug-related search warrant; Phoenix Police told local media an arrest was made in connection with that investigation earlier in the day.
