Man pulled from Calgary lake dies of injuries; fund set up for family

A fund has since been set up in Octavio Terriquez's name to help support the family he leaves behind. Submitted

CALGARY – A man who was pulled from Lake Chaparral in early August has succumbed to his injuries, and a fund has since been set up in his name to help support the family he leaves behind.

Octavio Hernandez Terriquez, a husband and father of three, died on Aug. 10. A funeral is set for Thursday in southeast Calgary at the Mountain View Funeral Home. The funeral starts at 6 p.m. and is open to all friends and family.

Terriquez was swimming with his family at Lake Chaparral on Aug. 3 when he was spotted sinking under the water.

His wife alerted members of the Calgary Fire Department’s Aquatic Rescue Team who were at the lake performing training exercises, and firefighters quickly pulled him out of the water.

“We couldn’t have got there quicker, couldn’t have gotten him out of the water quicker,” said Acting Battalion Chief Fred Rogi in a past interview. “He got medical attention immediately.”

Firefighters performed CPR on Terriquez, who was then rushed to the South Health Campus in life-threatening condition. Terriquez was unable to recover from his injuries, and passed away in hospital a week later.

A fund has been set up for members of the public to donate to the family on YouCaring.com.

A statement sent Tuesday on behalf of the family said Terriquez came to Canada in 2007 with his wife, Florisel Ramon Lopez, from Guadalajara, Mexico.

“Octavio was an ambitious man and opened his own business in 2011,” said the statement. “In a short period of time he gained respect and trust in his line of work.  He was survived by his wife, two five-year-old sons, and six-month-old daughter.”
