CALGARY – The Alberta Party and the Progressive Conservatives have chosen candidates to run in the provincial riding of Calgary-Foothills.

Alberta Party Leader Greg Clark introduced Mark Taylor as the party’s candidate for the upcoming byelection.

“It’s an honour to be nominated as a candidate here,” said Mark Taylor at a Tuesday news conference in northwest Calgary. “I look forward to the opportunity to work with Greg Clark.”

The Progressive Conservative Party chose businessman Blair Houston as its candidate.

“My family and I are committed to serve the constituents of Calgary-Foothills for the next four years and beyond,” said Houston in a statement on Tuesday afternoon. “Our residents want and deserve the best possible MLA – someone who’s hard-working and ready to listen and act on their concerns. As a small businessman, dedicated husband and father, I believe I’m the best person to represent the constituency.”

It will be the third time in less than a year that voters will head to the polls. The riding had been a Progressive Conservative stronghold for years, but has been without representation since the May 5 provincial election.

Former PC premier Jim Prentice handily won the riding, but resigned his seat even before the counting was finished as the Tories were swept from power by the NDP.

The NDP previously announced former Calgary councillor Bob Hawkesworth as their candidate, while the Liberals have selected software specialist Ali Bin Zahid. Party leader Janet Keeping is representing the Greens.

The Wildrose party holds its nomination meeting on Tuesday.
