REGINA – It’s been 53 years since Jamaica gained independence from Britain and that event is being celebrated in the Queen City.
While Jamaican independence day is on August 6th, on Friday a flag was raised at Regina’s city hall to commemorate the event.

The flag raising not only gives the Jamaican community a chance to celebrate their heritage, but helps the younger generation to learn about their ancestry.
“When we’re gone we need to pass the batons to the next generation, if we don’t keep doing this they don’t know where they are,” said Mavis Ashbourne-Palmer, the president of the Saskatchewan Jamaican Association.
“They’re caught between two cultures: the Jamaican culture and the Canadian culture. It’s important for them to know both. They’re here to stay. They’re not going anywhere.”
