Dog dropped off at Utah vet for teeth cleaning, gets spayed unnecessarily

WATCH: A trip to the vet for a teeth cleaning ended with an unnecessary surgery and a battle over the bill. Nicole Vowell reports.

A dog owner in Utah is upset after the veterinary clinic she took her dog Pepper to unnecessarily performed surgery on her.

Mariah Jones only wanted a simple teeth cleaning for her four-year-old Jack Russell, and opted to send her to Heartsong Clinic in Clearfield, Utah after a friend recommended it to her.

Online reviews show that clients of the clinic are generally pleased by their services.

But Jones was appalled when she discovered that Pepper, who had been spayed before, had gone under the knife for the same procedure she had already endured.

The owner of the clinic, Terry Emmons, admits there may have been a bit of confusion with the paperwork.

Jones blames the clinic for not being more careful with filling out the forms when she booked the appointment.

The check mark was actually indicating that Pepper was being admitted to get spayed.

“I’m not sure it was our error, but at least somewhere along the line, maybe we made a mistake,” said Emmons.

Jones said she is frustrated that this “terrible thing” happened to her dog, leaving a preventable scar.

In the end, Jones was asked to pay $35 to cover the cost of anesthesia and had to take time off work to take care of her pet.

Jones says this is the first and last time she will be taking her business to Heartsong.
