New Tsuu T’ina sportsplex could aid in Calgary hockey arena demand

Watch above: A new sports complex is expected to ease some of the pressure on Calgary ice times. The sod was turned Wednesday on the Tsuu T’ina First Nation where new rinks will fill the gap between supply and demand. Global’s Stefan Keyes reports.

CALGARY – A ground breaking ceremony was held Wednesday in honour of a new sportsplex being built on the Tsuu T’ina First Nation that could come in handy for Calgary area athletes.

The facility will include new ice rinks and seating for 5,000 people.

“It’s quite the catalyst to keep us going as a partnership with Calgarians in terms of building our sports spirit,” said Tsuu T’ina spokesperson Kevin Littlelight.

Tsuu T’ina residents have been without an arena since November. The 7 Chiefs arena is being prepped for demolition in order for the southwest ring road to be built. When the band negotiated the $275-million payout for that land, it included a rough estimate of the cost of the new arena, pegged at $48 million.
