Toddler injured in second dog attack in Alberta this week

For the second time in just three days, a family pet turned on a young child in our province. But unlike the tragic incident in Airdrie on Wednesday, in which a newborn died after being attacked by the family’s Husky, the most recent victim, a Fort Saskatchewan toddler, escaped with just stitches.

The boy’s mother tells Global News it happened around 11 Saturday night. She says she had just finished giving her two boys, aged three and four, a bath and was putting the towels away, when she heard her youngest son scream. She quickly ran into the kitchen, where she found her three-year old boy had been bitten twice in the back of the head by the family’s mastiff.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

When she approached the dog, he also bit her in the arm.

The little boy was rushed to hospital, where he received seven stitches.

As for the dog, the family says animal control took it in last night and the dog will be put down soon.

Meanwhile, neighbours are relieved to hear the toddler is fine.

“I’m glad the little boy’s doing ok. I mean, that’s my first concern,” said neighbour, Clayton Lucier. “But also, I’m kinda glad to hear the dog has been dealt with because you can’t have aggressive dogs like that. They’re great if they’re well behaved but aggressive dogs have no place around kids.”

The mother says the mastiff was about two years old and had only been living in the home for two months. She says before yesterday, he hadn’t shown any signs of aggression.

RCMP say no charges will be laid in relation to the incident as the dog was taken away at the family’s request.
