Edmonton stabbing victim was millimetres away from death: police

EDMONTON – A house party in the McCauley neighbourhood almost turned deadly early Saturday morning, after an alcohol-fuelled altercation ended in a 19 year-old man being stabbed.

Police say the stabbing, at 110 Avenue and 93 Street, was the result of a fight that erupted around 3 a.m. and then spilled onto the street. The victim was rushed to the Royal Alex hospital, where he underwent surgery, and is now in intensive care.

“The doctors have indicated it was a very tenuous situation for the young man but he is now expected to survive, said Staff Sgt. Malcolm Allan.

“Literally it was a matter of millimetres between life and death. Had the knife gone another two millimetres, then he would have certainly died on the scene, it was that close.”

Next-door neighbour Bernice Stor, who’s lived in the area for nearly 50 years, was shocked to see the residence taped off Saturday morning.

She said she hasn’t had any problems with the neighbours, other than hearing occasional yelling.

“This street is quiet here. Before there was some drug houses, but they closed them down.”

Another area resident, Leah Jackson, who moved into the neighbourhood about a year ago, also hasn’t had problems. And despite the overnight violence, neither of the women are too worried.

“I’m probably not going to walk down the street by myself at 3 in the morning, but I’m not overly afraid. I have the house alarm, it’s fine,” said Jackson.

Police are still investigating. They have arrested several people, who are facing assault related charges.  Police are still trying to find out who stabbed the 19-year-old, though.
