NEAR OSOYOOS — It’s any parents’ nightmare; a school bus full of children in danger.

That was the case Thursday afternoon when a bus carrying about 30 children from a church camp in Princeton was eastbound on Highway 3 about 20 kilometers west of Osoyoos.

RCMP Cpl. Shana McLeod says a pick-up truck pulling a travel trailer was going the opposite direction when the driver tried to pass a large transport truck.

“The driver of the Dodge truck lost control while trying to swerve back in front of the tractor trailer,” says McLeod. “The driver was unable to regain control and slid sideways, driver’s door first, into the front of the bus.”

McLeod says the main body of the travel trailer broke off from its frame and flew over an embankment before bursting into flames and being destroyed.

“Two of the occupants from the bus were taken to South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver with minor injuries,” says McLeod. “The occupants of the Dodge were also transported to SOGH and Penticton Regional Hospital with minor injuries.”

The accident closed the highway for about two hours.

Forestry firefighters extinguished the brush fire caused by the flaming trailer.
