REGINA – Two stepping to country music is a blast, but can be tough to do an empty stomach

Some campers at the Craven Country Jamboree are keeping full with impressive meals, while others are relying on classic camping staples likes hot dogs and burgers to make it through the weekend.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and a few spreads consisting of eggs, bacon, and hash browns were spotted at one campsite Friday morning. Putting together this type of menu is a team effort.

“Everybody brings a supply of food for a day or a night,” said one camper as he cooked up a morning omelette, “she actually works out pretty slick.”

Craven is a celebration of country music, and what celebration is complete without a feast. One group of campers has a 10-and-a-half pound roast, and is expecting to have about 30 people over for supper.

But not everyone has the same culinary aspirations. Some keep it simple.

“It’s like booze, hotdogs, your clothing, and then maybe breakfast foods,” was the grocery list for one group of campers.

Others stay within a very small food budget.

“We brought a lot of snacks, bagels, granola bars just stuff that’s not very expensive. We’re on a budget, no meals.”

Main street features over 20 different types of food items for those that run out of food, or are just tired of cooking.

From curly fries poutine to a bacon cheeseburger to a classic taco in a bag, the vendors have a little something for everyone.

Perogies are always one of the most popular food items at Craven, and a large number are expected to be eaten once again this year.

“We did about 15,000 perogies last year so were hoping to break our record of 16,000 this year. Lots of food goers out there,” said Dave Secuur, a worker at Aunt Vera’s Romanian Kitchen.

And for those that might be feeling a bit guilty about their unhealthy food choices, vendors have some advice: don’t worry about it.

“Craven is all calorie free. Gotta remember Craven is calorie free.”
