WATCH: Global’s Elysia Bryan-Baynes is onsite as Montreal’s Comiccon convention kicks off, bringing every self-proclaimed geek’s dream to life (including hers!)
MONTREAL – It’s here. It’s finally here.
Montreal Comiccon is taking over the Palais de Congrès from July 3 to the 5.
The event usually takes place in September, but it’s gotten so popular over the last few years that organizers needed more space for the tens of thousands of people who show up to enjoy the experience.

So, they moved it to July so they could take over the whole convention centre.
Whether it’s your first time or you’re a Comiccon pro, here’s are 5 things that make Montreal Comiccon a geek’s dream come true:
The comics
Obviously. It’s in the title.
But as superhero culture becomes more mainstream, some congresses have opted to focus more on the stars and the merchandise.
Fortunately for local comic fans, Montreal’s edition has managed to marry both star power and comic credibility.
If you’re a comic completionist (you have to have every issue in a series), Montreal is a great place to try and get the goods you need.
Tip: Start early if you want better chances of scooping up those rare issues and take the time to check out artists’ alley and discover something new.
The cosplayers
Every year, office buddies like “Bob from accounting” or “Jen from HR” bring to life everyone’s favourite superheroes.
You never know who you’ll see dressed up as The Huntress or Iron Man.

And that’s fabulous.
But just because Bob looks good in his Green Arrow costume, doesn’t mean you can touch him.
For several years now, some Comic conventions have stressed the importance of respecting cosplayers.
Montreal is no different.
Last year there was a special workshop for participants to talk about harassment.
So enjoy the colours, creativity and wonder, but remember to be respectful.
Tip: Ask permission before taking pictures – just because someone is dressed up does not mean you can touch, grab or pull them.
The stars
The great thing about superheroes, zombies and fantasy going mainstream is that there are now a plethora of shows and movies out there to enjoy.
With that comes the actors who play them.
Each year, organizers manage to get new and returning faces to come to Montreal: Arrow‘s John Barrowman and David Ramsey, Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie and Jason Momoa, Hayley Atwell, Karen Gillan and Kevin Smith (to name a few).
The star power is strong this year.
Tip: Don’t forget your name and snort like I did a few years back when I met Manu Bennett, Ray Park and Sean Astin – embarrassing, but totally worth it.
Panels and pictures
Many stars will give panels and have photo shoots with fans.
You have to pay for autographs and to snap a selfie, but if a star you absolutely adore is going to be there, book ahead and get it done.
They may not be back at Comiccon for several more years.
Tip: Plan out your days to maximize panel possibilities and check pricing before arriving at a star’s booth.
Geek love
Even if you don’t get dressed up, or buy comics or want to meet-and-greet the stars, it’s still amazing to be around fellow geeks.
Where else can you discuss the need for a “World’s Finest” show or marvel at the fact that we live in a world where you can see the guy who plays “The Flash” dance to “I want you back” on Youtube?
This year there’s even a wedding between a cosplaying Hans Solo and Princess Leia.
Tip: Take in the experience and enjoy yourself!
