Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On June 26, 1976 the CN Tower first opened its doors to the public. 1,537 workers laboured for 24 hours a day, five days a week for 40 months to build it.

Back then it was meant to showcase the strength of Canadian industry by being the tallest tower in the world.

It no longer is, but continues to attract over 1.5 million visitors every year.

“About half of our visitors are from outside of Canada and probably 75 per cent of our visitors come from outside the GTA,” said Tompkins.

The CN Tower has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Over the decades it has added an award-winning restaurant and new features, like a glass floor and thematic lighting, to re-invent itself for the public.

The most recent addition, EdgeWalk, has become a huge success.

“It allows people walk on the outside of the CN Tower, 1168 feet in the air. Since we’ve opened we’ve had over 70,000 walkers who’ve experienced it,” said Tompkins.
