EDMONTON – Some wild summer weather passed through regions south of the city Tuesday afternoon.

In a video sent in to Global News, hail can be seen accumulating on the roads near Wetaskiwin. Emily Gereluk, who shot the video, says it was taken from the QEII around 4:40 p.m.

The hail was so heavy it looked like snow piling up on the highway. Several vehicles pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway to wait out the storm.

Global Edmonton weather specialist Margeaux Morin says the majority of the severe weather will stay south of the Edmonton region.

“We’ve been tracking quite a bit of instability through central and southern Alberta Tuesday afternoon. Although the severe storms remain deep in southern Alberta, the storm fronts moving through central regions are capable of producing high winds, short spurts of heavy rain and small-sized hail,” says Morin.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“We’re watching it move through Edson, Drayton Valley, south through Camrose,” said Morin. “But it’s really not doing a whole lot on top of Edmonton.”

Morin says similar unstable conditions will continue through to Wednesday. There is a 30 to 60 per cent chance of seeing widespread scattered thunderstorms across the province, she adds.

A ridge of high pressure is expected to move into the region on Thursday, which will result in warm temperatures and clear skies.
