Song in cyber-bullying victim Jenna Bowers-Bryanton’s memory to raise money for Kids Help Phone

HALIFAX – One year ago, 15-year-old Jenna Bowers-Bryanton took her own life.

The Truro, N.S. girl battled with depression and was a target for bullies online and at school.

Her story struck a chord with Halifax singer-songwriter Kim Nowlan, who recently wrote and recorded a song in Bowers-Bryanton’s memory.

“As happy as I am to do the song for Jenna, in Jenna’s memory, it truly is a song that shouldn’t have had to have been written for someone to listen to,” she says.

In the song “Silence Speaks to No One” Nowlan urges both victims and witnesses to open up about bullying.

“Silence speaks to nobody if you are being bullied and don’t speak out. Silence speaks to nobody if you are bystanding and don’t say anything,” she says.

Nolan released the song last month, with the help of local producer John Noseworthy, who composed the music for the track.

For Pam Murchison, Bowers-Bryanton’s mother, the song let’s people get to know her daughter and she hopes it will make people think twice about bullying someone.

“I just think it lets people know Jenna was more than the way she died. That she was someone who was loved very, very much… and the devastation my family and I have gone through since she died,” Murchison says.

Nowlan didn’t want to make any profit from the sale of the song, so she contacted the Kids Help Phone to see if they would be willing to sell CDs and keep the proceeds.

They gladly agreed.
