8-year-old Fredericton boy dies after being hit by car while playing

WATCH: A Fredericton family remains in mourning after their 8-year-old son was hit by a car and killed late Sunday afternoon. As Global’s Laura Brown reports, police aren’t releasing many more details about the incident.

FREDERICTON – New Brunswick police say an eight-year-old boy was killed after being hit by a car as he played in his Fredericton neighbourhood.

They say the boy was struck just after 4 p.m. Sunday on the south side of the city.

He was taken to hospital, but died from his injuries a short time later.

“As you can well understand, this is a very difficult situation for everyone involved,” said spokesperson Alycia Morehouse in a statement.

“What is paramount at this time, is the ongoing police investigation, and considerations for the family. As we can all appreciate, the incident that occurred is an unexpected and tragic event, and we are abiding by the family’s wishes as they deal with this horrible situation.”

The driver, a woman who was alone in the car, was not injured.

Members of the Primary Response Team, Accident Reconstruction Team, Identification Section, Victim Witness and Major Crime Team attended the scene.

The investigation to determine the cause is continuing.
