VANCOUVER – Health Canada’s Lightning Danger Map helps Canadians see the areas across the country that are most at risk from being struck by lightning in the next 10 minutes.
The map uses information from recent lightning strikes to create high danger zones, which are indicated in red.
B.C. had five times the number of normal lightning strikes in May.
It is not only a direct lightning strike that people need to be cautious of – ground current, side flash and upward leaders can all injure or kill a person.

If red circles are over your location then you are immediate danger of being injured or killed by a lightning strike in the next 10 minutes.
People are advised to go to an all-metal vehicle, or a building with wiring and plumbing for shelter. Do not shelter under a tree.
Environment Canada wants to remind everyone – when thunder roars, go indoors.
