‘Oliver!’ star Ron Moody dies at 91

TORONTO — British actor Ron Moody, best known for playing Fagin in 1968’s hit film Oliver!, has died at 91.

Moody’s death on Thursday, in hospital, was confirmed by his wife Therese.

Born Ronald Moodnick in London, he didn’t get into acting until his late 20s.

He portrayed Fagin in a London production of Charles Dickens’ classic story of Oliver Twist in 1960 and then reprised the role in the film adaptation — earning him an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe award.

Moody won a Tony Award for playing Fagin in a Broadway production of Oliver! in 1984.

He worked continuously in films and on TV until only a few years ago. His long list of credits includes series like EastEnders, The Animals of Farthing Wood and Into the Labyrinth.

Moody played Merlin in the 1995 Disney comedy A Kid in King Arthur’s Court.

He is survived by his wife and six children.
