UPDATED: York region transit workers approve new contract

NEWMARKET, Ont. – Bus drivers and mechanics for one of the contractors involved in the York Region Transit strike reportedly voted 77% in favour of the proposed contract.

Local 113 of the Amalgamated Transit Union recommended the 225 employees of Veolia Transportation accept the deal. Veolia operates the Viva bus service.

A company spokesman says if the deal is approved, service should be running again by Feb. 4.

The union representing striking Miller Transit workers has reached a tentative agreement with York Region. Reports indicate that the union is recommending its members to vote in favour of the tentative agreement. 

Another company, First Canada, had its contract terminated by York Region.

The region announced today that it has hired TOK Transit Ltd. to take over that contract.

Reports suggest full service could resume by the first week of February.
