Global News sports reporter Lisa MacGregor has teamed up with Olympian Jesse Lumsden to learn how to golf like a pro. Check out Lisa’s Shaw Classic 101 blogs to track their progress.

CALGARY – From playing in tournaments to pitch-and-putt, it’s no secret that golf is a challenging sport.

For all those struggling golfers out there, follow Global Calgary’s learn-to-golf series Shaw Classic 101, as Olympic bobsledder and former CFL all-star Jesse Lumsden and Global sports reporter Lisa MacGregor better their game.

Golf Canada Centre Instructor Bill Murchison and his colleagues will help these two very differently skilled golfers reach their goals.

Murchison says from what he’s seen so far of the two golfers, he has lots of great qualities to work with.

“If we make those setup changes, they’re going to be well on their way,” said Murchison.

The pair may have two different skill sets, but they’re both looking to improve their strokes.

From playing pro football to the Olympic bobsled track, Lumsden is hoping his athletic abilities will carry over into his golf game.

“I want to be good at it, but that’s kind of like everything that I do though,” he said.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“When I started getting shoulder injuries, it obviously hampered my profession in football but it kept me away from the golf course because I obviously wanted to focus on getting back (to football). ”

Jesse Lumsden’s goals:

  • Consistently shoot in the 80’s with the ability to break 80.
  • Be able to hit my driver again. Its a hot mess, like, Charles Barkley hot mess.
  • Beat my dad, or at least make it interesting. He is a great player. Never even been close. He’s had my number for 32 years.

“My goals are to be able to shoot consistently in the low 80’s and to be able to break 80. 85 has been my best score, I’ve never even touched it in the last few years. I also want to get close or beat my dad. He’s one heck of a golfer. “

Lumsden also wants to be able to hit his driver again. It’s what he calls a ‘hot mess.’

“It (driver) hasn’t come out of my bag in I don’t know how many rounds of golf, because there’s a fear of it and that sucks. You can’t play unless you can hit your driver.”

As for Global sports reporter Lisa MacGregor, she’s more of a beginner. She talks about golf on TV but doesn’t have the ‘game’ to back it up.

Lisa MacGregor’s goals:

  • Be better at golfing than driving the cart.
  • To be able to compete with the average golfer on any course.
  • Learn and embrace the etiquette of the game.
  • To be able to show up her brother ‘Shooter MacGregor’ on the course one day. Chirping included.

Golf Canada Centre in Calgary will track the progression of both players in lessons, while they commit to practicing.

They’ll learn everything from the mental game to club fitting while working on their short and long game.

Every detail will be addressed like a pro and there’s no better motivation for them to reach their goals, than knowing they’ll play a round of golf at Canyon Meadows with a Champions Tour professional this August, when the Shaw Charity Classic rolls into town.

Each week, Lumsden and MacGregor will share golf tips they’ve learned from the professionals and write about their improvements on the Shaw Classic 101 blog.
