“Being part of the Morning News team was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”

After a two year hiatus from Global News, Eva Kovacs has returned to her old stomping grounds to launch the first ever morning newscast on Global Winnipeg.

Eva started her Television career in 1998 at Global Television in Winnipeg and spent almost 12 years as part of the Global News team working as Anchor, Reporter and Producer. She left this successful broadcast journalism career and took a leap into corporate communications to find a better balance between work and life.

“Working nights became increasingly challenging with young children and while I loved television news, I knew it was time to take a step back and make the shift to a day job.” When the prospect of being part of a brand new morning show presented itself, Eva jumped at the chance to dive back into the exciting career that stole her heart.

“This is a great fit. It’s like having the best of both worlds – I can be home in time to spend time with my husband and kids and get back into news.”

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Eva’s enthusiasm for community comes from a personal connection and concern about what happens within our neighborhoods, city and province. She enjoys making that human connection with the people she meets and through the stories she tells.

While following a group of Manitobans to Hawaii to report on a fundraising marathon, Eva decided to join the team of participants. She trained alongside the group and ran her first ever marathon in support of arthritis research.

“Experiences like that are incredible opportunities to grow as a person. I met some incredible people and felt a real connection with the team. It helped me appreciate what they were going through.”

“Being part of the Morning News on Global Winnipeg is an amazing opportunity to connect to our community. I want to bring you a whole new kind of newscast in the morning.”

Derek joined Global Winnipeg in 2007 where he spent 5 years anchoring North America’s #1 soccer show: the Fox Soccer Report, airing on Fox Sportsworld Canada and produced at Global Winnipeg.

“Highlights from my time on the Fox Soccer Report include covering the MLS Cup in 2007 and 2010 and flying to Los Angeles to play a video game against American soccer superstar Landon Donovan”.

Derek grew up in Okotoks Alberta (just south of Calgary) and studied journalism at Ryerson University in Toronto. “I loved sports and television as a kid. I learned at age 6 that I wouldn’t be a pro athlete, so tried to find something else.” He knew in high school that television is where he wanted to be. He loved sports and thought that television was a way to show people that they should love sports too.

Derek’s first on-air job was doing weather, traffic and snow reports on 106.5 Mountain FM in Canmore, Alberta. His first TV job was as a news reporter in Kamloops, BC. “Highlights from there include sitting in a car with a parka on in 36-degree heat to show why you shouldn’t leave your dog in the car.”

Derek came to Winnipeg in December 2001 and worked as a news reporter. “My fondest memory of news reporting is a story about a boy being hit in the face and knocked off his skateboard by a goose. We did the story in the vein of America’s Most Wanted, and that the geese were trying to take over the city.”

Derek’s years of broadcasting experience, great sense of humour and love for his chosen career make him a great fit for Morning News. “We can teach you things and learn things from you as well. I hope we give you a new way to look at issues about our city and country. Most of all I want to send you out the door feeling better about yourself and the city you live in.”

Mike1  Mike Koncan/Weather Specialist
Mike Koncan joins Global Winnipeg as the Morning News Weather Specialist, weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

As a self admitted ‘morning person’ Mike is eager to collect and deliver comprehensive weather information to Manitobans. Mike understands the importance of providing the most current and accurate information as people head out for the day.

Mike has dabbled in everything from sports programming to comedy. His resume includes working for broadcasters as diverse as the Home Shopping Network to Rogers TV.

Mike admits, “ever since I was young I wanted a career in broadcasting.” He got a taste of broadcasting on the campus radio and television stations at Brock University in Ontario. He knew he wanted more and attended Ryerson University focusing on television.

A newcomer to Manitoba, Mike was seen by Ontarians hosting Rogers TV programs such as Friday Night Live, Daytime, High School SportsZone, Everything But Hockey, and the sports segment First Local.

Though new to Manitoba, Mike has family and memories in Winnipeg, including seeing Gretzky play against the ‘old’ Winnipeg Jets at the old Winnipeg arena. He anticipates becoming a fan of the new Winnipeg Jets.

Mike is excited about the more casual style of Morning News, as his years in comedy have endowed him with the ability to work with information on the fly…and speaking of fly, as an avid outdoorsman, Mike wants to try fly-fishing in his new home province. So drop him a line if you have any good tips about where the best fishing is to be found.
