WINNIPEG – Allexis Siebrecht’s liver transplant in Toronto went well and the 11-year-old’s mother is focused on recovery, a family friend said Tuesday.

Siebrecht went into surgery in Toronto early Monday morning after a liver became available from a deceased donor. The all-day surgery went well, Tina Lussier told Global News in a text.

“We finally have news about Allexis!! Surgery went well and she is recovering,” Lussier posted on her Facebook page at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. “Her mom Liz will continue to focus on Allexis’ recovery. Continued prayers for a fast recovery is appreciated. Thank you God!!!”

The family learned late Saturday that a liver was available and she was flown by air ambulance from Winnipeg to Toronto for surgery at the Hospital for Sick Children.

Allexis was diagnosed with biliary atresia at three months and was recently put on the list for a liver transplant. The family took their search for a live donor public out of fear she would die before a liver became available.

Lussier’s adult daughter, Samantha, was one of the people who came forward to offer to be a live donor, but tests in Toronto showed she wasn’t a suitable match. The family then met the Siebrechts and Tina Lussier has become their spokeswoman in Winnipeg while the family focuses on the health of Allexis.

Friends continue to fundraise to help the family cover costs of travel and living in Toronto. Allexis’ recovery in Toronto could take up to six months. A gofundme page has been set up for her and a Bud, Spud and Steak night will be held June 11 at The Oak in Transcona.
