Winnipeg police nab speeders, pull cars off road on cruise night

WINNIPEG — Police had six cars towed for failing to be road-safe and caught a person driving 50 kilometres per hour over the speed limit on Winnipeg streets Sunday night.

The Winnipeg Police Service warned Friday the force planned to step up traffic enforcement on summer Sunday nights, when many drivers participate in “cruise night,” an opportunity for car fans to see and be seen in the city.

They handed out a total of 55 tickets Sunday night, the force said in a news release Monday, including one for driving 130 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, which carries a recommended fine of more than $700. There were 15 drivers ticketed for not having required equipment, including the six whose vehicles were towed, while eight more were issued warnings for not having required equipment.

The ticketed offences, as outlined by police, include:

  • 7 licence-plate related
  • 1 novice driver with a blood alcohol content
  • 1 speeder
  • 6 distracted drivers (using cellphones)
  • 2 suspended drivers
  • 15 failures to have required equipment
  • 4 seat belt violations
  • 5 window tint violations
  • 5 prohibited lighting
  • 2 no insurance
  • 1 imprudent driving
