FREDERICTON – Members of the New Brunswick Jeep Club spent their Sunday cleaning up what others left behind.

“We’re all about having fun but you have to respect the property that you’re on,” said member Scott Praught. “You come out to a place like this and you see a bunch of garbage that people like to dump.”

The group spent Sunday along Claudie Road on Fredericton’s north side, near a popular golf course, where illegal dumping is a problem.

“No dumping” signs sit along the road but right beside them are piles of garbage.

“I’ve noticed, especially the last few weeks, you see a few trucks going by with the utility trailers full of garbage,” Praught said. “About 20 minutes later, they come back and they’re empty.

The club easily filled several trailers along two kilometres of the 10 kilometre road. And while they don’t hold a grudge about it, they call it disrespectful.

“It’s kind of a nuisance for us because we’d rather by out here enjoying the trails and the nature but with all the garbage out here we feel enough is enough and we need to pick it up,” said Tyson Bowen.

The club abides by the “tread lightly” policy, which respects the property their driving on, trying to keep it unchanged.

But while they ride and have fun, the Jeep Club also works to give back to the community. Sunday’s garbage clean-up was only part of what the club does on a regular basis.

“I wanted a four-wheeler but my wife, when she heard there was a Jeep Club, she said, ‘Get a Jeep,’ and man, I’m so happy she did,” said Marcel Boudreau.
