CALGARY- A Calgary couple is trying to get in contact with a Good Samaritan who saved a wife and mother from a fiery crash northwest of Bassano on Friday.

On Friday afternoon, Heather Watling was driving her husband Dave and their son to go camping at Dinosaur Park when a gust of wind caused their trailer to fishtail on Highway 1 near Bassano. Their SUV rolled several times before bursting into flames just a few minutes later and Heather was left trapped in the vehicle.

“I heard Heather just shriek,” said Dave.  “She goes, ‘oh no’ and that was it and we just started rolling. I could see each roll and I could see the roof coming down each time it rolled and it came closer and closer.”

In those few minutes between the SUV coming to a halt and catching fire, several people pulled over and helped Heather get out of the SUV.

“There were so many voices of people saying ‘you gotta get out, you gotta push, you gotta try’ because I was pinned in and they couldn’t get me out,” said Heather. “The one man said ‘it’s on fire, you have to get out’ and that gave me extra little incentive when I heard fire.”

Heather is now stiff and bruised and using a wheelchair to get around but the family did make it out without any major injuries. Even their dog, Shadow, only suffered a scratch under his eye after being thrown out of the sunroof.

The Watlings are now looking for help to find Heather’s rescuer. They say all they know is that he has a Scottish accent and that they believe he may have some experience as a first responder.
