Three Amherst, N.S. schools placed on lockdown

AMHERST, N.S. – A ‘suspicious incident’ led to the lockdown of three schools in Amherst, N.S. Tuesday morning.

Amherst Police Deputy Chief Ian Naylor says school resource officers on duty at Amherst Regional High School were alerted to the possibility of an individual carrying a weapon walking on Townsend Avenue toward Willow Street, where the school is located.

“That information was passed onto the principal and they subsequently made the decision to go into the code blue lockdown at the highs school,” Naylor says.

The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board said in press release the high school and two other nearby schools – EB Chandler Junior High and Spring Street Academy – were placed under a code blue lockdown, as a precaution.

As of 11:00 a.m. Amherst Regional High was still on lockdown and students remained in their classrooms.

The code blue lockdown was lifted at EB Chandler and Spring Street Academy, but the doors were locked to the public.

The school board says “staff at the schools will monitor the school doors during lunch and a police car will be stationed outside the main doors at both schools.”

Naylor says officers remain on site at all three schools and will most likely be there until the end of the day.
