Music, movies and ballet: Summer fun returns to Assiniboine Park

WINNIPEG – From family-friendly movies to jazz and classic rock shows to the annual ballet performance, Assiniboine Park’s annual free outdoor entertainment series is back.

It kicks off with a Winnipeg Pops Orchestra performance at the Lyric Theatre on June 25 and ends Aug. 30 with the Klowak/Cummings Group closing the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden Sunday afternoon jazz shows.

In between, people will be able to see Juno Award-winner Liona Boyd, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, jazz guitarist Marc Antoine and the world-renowned Royal Winnipeg Ballet at the Lyric Theatre, listen to Winnipeg jazz every Sunday afternoon in the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, watch movies from Big Hero 6 to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part I outdoors on Friday nights in August or check out art exhibits at the Pavilion Gallery Museum.

The Leo Mol Sculpture Garden jazz series schedule, where shows run 3-4 p.m. Sundays, is:

  • July 5 – Dr. Dave

  • Aug. 9 – Connor Derraugh
  • Aug. 16 – Shannon Kristjanson
  • Aug. 23 – Bill McMahon

The Pavilion Gallery Museum will feature:

  • May 12-29 – Emerging Canadian Artists, featuring work from the Glenlawn Collegiate visual arts program.
  • June 1-20 – A Walk in the Park, featuring Winnipeg-based landscape and travel photographer David Lauder.
  • July 8-28 – 13th Annual Rural and Northern Art Show, featuring award-winning art in a variety of media by artists from rural and northern Manitoba.
  • The pavilion will also exhibit watercolours, drawings and prints by Walter J. Phillips in the John P. Crabb Gallery.
