TORONTO — Canadian artist The Weeknd will top the Billboard Pop Songs chart this week for the first time ever.

The Toronto singer’s “Earned It” from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack will bump Ellie Goulding’s “Love Me Like You Do” from the No. 1 spot.

It’s the first time a song from a movie soundtrack has been replaced on the Pop Songs chart by a song from the same soundtrack since 1998, when “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls bumped “Uninvited” by Ottawa’s Alanis Morissette from No. 1.

Both those songs appeared on the City of Angels soundtrack.

The chart, which is based on radio airplay, will be updated Thursday.

It took 12 weeks for The Weeknd’s “Earned It” to reach the top spot. The video for the song has been viewed more than 104 million times.
