WINNIPEG — The Manitoba government is proposing new rules that it says would make the legal profession more accountable.
A bill before the legislature would allow the media to report names of lawyers charged by the provincial law society with disciplinary offences.

Those names currently are protected until the lawyer is convicted.
The proposal would also allow the law society to regulate law firms, not just individual lawyers.
Another change would add two non-lawyers to the law society’s governing body, bringing it to a total of six people.
Justice Minister Gord Mackintosh says the changes bring Manitoba in line with many other provinces.
