Mayor Tory’s approval rating holds steady at 61 per cent: poll

TORONTO – Mayor John Tory’s approval rating is remaining steady at 61 per cent, according to a new poll released by Mainstreet Technologies.

The survey, conducted among 2,493 respondents, found the strongest support came from Downtown with a 71 per cent approval rating followed by Scarborough at 63 per cent, North York at 55 per cent and Etobicoke at 48 per cent.

The poll also asked Toronto residents about internet voting with 50 per cent believing it would be secure while 55 per cent would support the move to implement it.

With a review underway at city hall to decide new ward boundaries, 48 of respondents say there are too many councillors at city hall, with 41 per cent saying it is just right and 10 per cent saying it isn’t enough.

There are currently 44 members at council.

With regards to election campaigns, 67 per cent of Torontonians approve of a shorter campaign period even if critics suggest that could benefit incumbents and make it difficult for challengers.

The Mainstreet Technologies Interactive Voice Response survey was conducted on April 30 with a margin of error of 1.96 per cent, 19 times out of 20.
