Cycling, walking plan goes up for debate at Winnipeg City Hall

A new report presents a 20-year police framework for active transportation in Winnipeg. Winnipeg Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies final report / City of Winnipeg

WINNIPEG – A 300-plus-page cycling and walking strategy for Winnipeg will go before council’s public works committee Tuesday.

The Winnipeg Pedestrian and Cycling Strategies is the proposed policy guide for the next 20 years of creating an active transportation network in the city.

Recommendations in the document, which would replace the active transportation portion of the city’s transportation master plan, include hiring a permanent, full-time pedestrian and bicycle planning position. Funds for the position would come from the existing budget under the bicycle corridors capital program (formerly active transportation corridors).

Also included in the strategy are five maps that show a network of existing and proposed bicycle lanes, off-street paths and greenways.

The downtown map shows proposed protected bycycle lanes leading downtown along St. Matthews Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue, an extension of the off-street pathway hugging the bend of the Red River around Point Douglas and a greenway along the river downtown.
