FORT McMURRAY, Alta. – The Melfort Mustangs of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) will compete for the national title. The team captured their spot on the weekend in Fort McMurray, Alta.

On April 16, the Mustangs completed a four-game sweep of the Notre Dame Hounds to win the SJHL and the Canalta Cup.

The 2015 SJHL champions travelled to Alberta where they advanced to the RBC Cup by defeating the Fort McMurray Oil Barons 4-2 Saturday in the bronze medal match of the Western Canada Cup (WCC).

Despite placing third, the Mustangs advanced since this year’s national tournament host already had a spot.

The last time Melfort made it to the RBC Cup was in 1996 when they placed second.
