Police and government agencies work together in major police operation in St. Leonard

Above watch: authorities were keeping an eye out for the top three driving infractions: seatbelts, speeding and cell-phone use and a whole lot more. Domenic Fazioli reports.

MONTREAL — Usually when you get pulled over by police, it’s for one of three infractions: seatbelts, speeding or cell-phone use.

In St. Leonard Wednesday morning, authorities were keeping an eye out for that and a whole lot more.

The Taxi Bureau was on hand doing surprise spot checks on cabs, and the Quebec Auto Insurance Bureau was also present, weighing vehicles with portable scales.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Baby seats were also checked, as were tinted windows.

Dozens of police officers and government officials took part in Wednesday’s operation, dubbed “Operation Unison.”

It’s one of the biggest joint police operations this year.

“The timing is important,” said Cmdr. Miguel Alston of the Montreal police.

“Springtime is when drivers sometimes hit the road impulsively without doing the basic checkups. It’s sunny outside; some drivers will go faster.”

Inspectors from Revenu Quebec checked the colour of the diesel fuel inside randomly-stopped transport trucks.

Commercial trucks in Quebec can only use a clear-coloured fuel.

A darker-coloured diesel fuel, which is not taxable, is reserved for the agriculture industry.
