Drivers annoyed at closures to the Georgia Viaduct last month still have plenty to grouse about this summer.
A number of road projects are ongoing through the downtown core. Some are for water main replacements and sewer upgrades. But many others are for new developments. There are 29 major commercial construction projects in the downtown area this summer.

“The overall construction is at the upper end of our work,” says City Transportation Director Jerry Dobrovolny.
“When you see those cranes, when they’re lifting loads, they require at least the curb lane and sometimes two lanes as they’re lifting loads onto the building site.”
Some of the largest projects include five blocks of Howe Street, and West Georgia, which has lane closures and traffic delays from Bute to Thurlow.
Beginning in July, Pender Street will begin nine months of delays from Gore Avenue to Seymour Street due to a water main replacement.
Outside of downtown, trench repairs will be down on East Broadway from Glen to Commercial, and swer work will be done on Alma Street from 4th to 15th Avenue.
“We have a really active economy right now, and part of what comes with that is a lot of competition,” said Dobrovolny last month.
Dobrovolny says they try to combine as many projects as possible to limit construction. For a full list of current and upcoming projects, you can check an online app created by the city.
