TORONTO – Travellers looking for a budget European destination in 2012 should consider Romania, a country that is “still relatively cheap” and offers plenty of activities for tourists, says Cheapflights.ca.
Natural attractions include mud volcanoes, glacial lakes and the Black Sea, says the website.
The capital, Bucharest, has numerous decent hotels priced around C$50 per night, it adds. A beer costs about $1.30, while “food is cheap and delicious.”

The Romanian Tourist Office suggests sample itineraries (go to http://bit.ly/xAXfKo), including a five-day jaunt by car or train from Bucharest that includes visiting the painted monasteries of Bukovina in the northern part of the country.
Bucharest is “definitely not Romania’s most charming town,” says the Price of Travel website, which recently surveyed 40 European cities for its “backpacker index.”
“Fortunately, those that make the effort to come will at least be rewarded with low prices all around.”
Sofia, Bulgaria, was ranked as Europe’s cheapest tourist city by Price of Travel. Listed in second place in the backpacker index was Krakow, Poland, followed by Budapest, Warsaw and Bucharest. In last place (most expensive) was Zurich.
