Volkswagen Canada says 2011 is best-ever sales year, beats 2010 by 16 per cent

AJAX, Ont. – Volkswagen Canada says it had its best-ever sales year in 2011, beating the previous record set in 2010 by 16 per cent.

The company says it sold 3,565 cars last month, pushing the full year total to 52,604.

December sales were led by the Jetta, which posted sales of 26,749 in that car’s most successful year.

Most automakers plan to release December and full-year results Wednesday.

Automakers have seen uneven but rising sales this year, with growth positive one month and negative the next, as economic uncertainty pervaded consumer sentiment.

A total 1.47 million vehicles had been sold as of Nov. 30 — already surpassing the 1.46 million sold in all of 2009 — the worst sales year for the industry since 1998, according to data released by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.
