WINNIPEG – CAA Manitoba wants the city to add flashing amber lights to signs warning drivers of reduced speed limits in school zones.
Money collected from those caught speeding in school zones could pay for improvements to the signs, said Mike Mager, that automobile association’s president and CEO.

Painted curbs or “Safety Sams” plastic signs placed on the street in school speed zones would also help, a news release from CAA said.
“We want to make it fairer for motorists,” Mager said.

The point of reduced speeds in school zones is to improve safety, not penalize drivers, he said.
“If you are going over the reduced speed limit in school zones, you are putting children at risk.”
A spokesperson for the City of Winnipeg says there are no plans to add flashing lights to school zone signs, adding that the provincial legislation that sets the rules for municipalities to enact lower speeds in school zones doesn’t allow for changes to the signage.
