TORONTO – There are a few universal rules when it comes to catching a foul ball at a baseball game: Always give a caught foul to the nearest cute kid. Never interfere with a live ball when your team is fielding. Don’t let the stroller carrying your kid roll away while you run for a foul.
And if you happen to catch a foul ball in your beer cup – you’ve got some drinking to do.
Social media was left buzzing this past weekend after two different fans in two separate ballparks managed to snag foul balls using their beer cups, then kept with tradition by chugging the remainder of their suds with the ball still floating in the cup.
One Chicago Cubs fan was subject to baseball’s great unwritten rule during Saturday afternoon’s Cubs vs. San Diego Padres game at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, after she managed to snag a foul ball in her cup of beer.
Her incredible catch (and the hearty chug that followed it) set social media alight.

And the woman who made the catch, Minnesota native Krista Dotzenrod, says the incredible catch was mostly coincidence.
“I was told they were amazing seats because you can catch a lot of foul balls,” Dotzenrod, 24, told the Chicago-Sun Times. “I was sitting there, and all of a sudden there is a ball in my cup. It fell straight in there. I didn’t know what to do.”
“It all happened in five seconds,” she said. “I chugged the beer and wished the Cubs a great year.”

But she wasn’t the only one – a fan sitting close to the dugout during the San Francisco Giants-Arizona Diamondbacks game had his own “foul bar beer chug” later that same day.
A foul ball rolling towards the Giants dugout was tossed to fans as a souvenier, but the initial recipient had an unfortunate case of butterfingers and the ball slipped out of his hands.
It’s landing spot? Another gentleman’s beer, of course. And in keeping with tradition, the unknown Giants fan proceeded to chug his cup of suds, though he received some “flack” on social media for not finishing his brew.

The foul ball beer catches proved fortiutous for both fans, as the home team ended up winning both games.
