MONTREAL – The Grand Prix Cycliste will stay in Montreal for at least another five years, announced the city Sunday.
The Grand Prix will be given an annual budget of $1.25 million by the city, said mayor Denis Coderre.
“We are proud to welcome this event for the next five years and to offer it freely to Montrealers and tourists,” he told reporters.
Montreal will also take care of technical and logistical costs, about $225,000.
This has to be confirmed by city council.
“The International Cyclists Union selected Montreal for one good reason,” said Coderre.
“We’re a bicycling city. We’re constantly becoming a better place for cycling.”
The Quebec government will also pitch in about $600,000 over the next three years.
“We have to share the road between cars, trucks, cyclists and pedestrians,” agreed Robert Poeti, the provincial Minister of Transport.
“We have to be cautious all together.”
This year’s Grand Prix Cycliste will take place on September 13.
It will be the event’s sixth edition.
