TORONTO – A Pakistani man accused of planning to blow up the U.S. consulate in Toronto will have to stay in custody pending a deportation hearing.
Jahanzeb Malik, 33, is scheduled to appear again before the Immigration and Refugee Board next month. Immigration and Refugee Board member Harry Adamidis ordered Malik to remain in custody as he deemed him a danger to the public and unlikely to appear at future hearings.
Malik was arrested on March 9. He appeared for his immigration detention review via a video link from a jail in Lindsay, Ont. His lawyer, Anser Farooq, made no submissions.

Malik is a permanent resident who came to Canada as a student more than a decade ago.
Earlier Tuesday, Adamidis reversed his decision and ordered a publication ban on the identity of the undercover RCMP officer who interacted with Malik during the investigation that led to his arrest.
The next detention review hearing is scheduled for May 11-12 where the board will hear from the undercover RCMP officer.
