Man charged with sex offence at Coventry Hills dayhome

CALGARY – Police have charged a 40-year-old man in connection to a sexual offence at a Calgary dayhome.

The assault was reported to police in March 2015, after a four-year-old girl told her parents she was asked to fondle a man while at a private dayhome in Coventry Hills.

The incident is alleged to have occurred sometime between September 2014 and the end of February 2015, at a dayhome located in the 0-100 block of Covehaven Crescent N.E.

“When dealing with children, we have to be mindful of their ability to articulate and speak to time so we are dealing with a young victim so we don’t have a specific time to provide,” said Staff Sergeant Melanie Oncescu of the Calgary Police Child Abuse Unit.

The man, who lives in the home but is not a childcare worker, is alleged to have had sexual contact with the girl when the two were alone together.

Police have charged Christopher Donald Colborne with invitation to sexual touching with a child under 16 and sexual interference.

People who live near the dayhome told Global News they don’t know much about the accused.

“I don’t know many of the details, but you know if it is true it’s a horrible thing,” said one neighbour.

Police say the dayhome operator is being uncooperative.

“It’s frustrating – we want to be able to speak to other families that attend the day home and have an understanding of their experiences there so it is frustrating,”said Staff Sergeant Oncescu.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to call 403-266-1234.

This is the second time in two months that police have charged someone with a sexually-motivated crime at a Calgary dayhome.

In February, police laid charges against a man accused of fondling a young boy at a dayhome in Rocky Ridge.
