CAPE BRETON- A 66-year-old man who died after he was struck by a police vehicle is being identified as  a former volunteer member of the North Sydney Fire Department.

Nova Scotia’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate after the pedestrian was hit on Saturday while officers were responding to a call about an injured child.

The man’s name has not been released by police but he has been identified by several people in the community as Dave Walsh. North Sydney fire chief Lloyd MacIntosh says Walsh helped a lot of people and even though he had recently retired as a volunteer firefighter, he was still a regular presence at the local department.
