TORONTO – Billionaire entrepreneur and Tesla CEO Elon Musk ignited a storm of speculation Monday with just one tweet.
“Major new Tesla product line — not a car — will be unveiled at our Hawthorne Design Studio on Thurs 8pm, April 30,” he wrote.
But what new product might Tesla have up its sleeve?
Home battery
Back in February, Tesla’s chief technology officer JB Straubel revealed the company is developing a battery pack that would power households and businesses.
Straubel said it’s possible the consumer battery pack could be unveiled “in the next month or two,” however, production wouldn’t begin for another six months.

The company offered little information about the project, but added the design of the batteries is already complete. But last year, Musk said the company hoped to develop a home battery, similar to the one found in its Model S car.
At the time, he said the battery would be designed with a “beautiful cover” and provide homeowners with “plug and play” capabilities – meaning it wouldn’t power the entire home. It’s not yet clear just how much power the home battery would supply.
Jet packs, teleporters and smartwatches – oh my
While many of Musk’s Twitter followers have agreed a home battery is the most likely announcement – others have come up with some more creative speculations.
